Week 9: Heart and Hustle: Bears Fall in OT While Tigers Finish with a Roar

Week 9 of the Central Alberta Minor Footballseason is in the books with once again the Atom Tigers wrapping up their season and Peewee Bears in action.

TIGERS

Playing with a small roster due to conflicting commitments for many of the players, the Tigers still managed to finish off a successful year with back-to-back Jamborees the past two weekends with games against Innisfail, Rocky and both Red Deer teams.

Blake Symons continued his strong play as he had throughout the season on both sides of the ball while other highlights included Sebastian Hrabb getting his first ever touchdown!

BEARS

The Peewee Bears however, didn’t fare as well in the CPWFL semi-finals, suffering their first loss of the campaign to the Red Deer Bucks 22-14, ending the Bears’ hopes of a repeat A-side league championship.

The game was not without controversy as a formal complaint was launched by the Bears due to the Bucks’ use of unauthorized radio communication equipment on-field. However, that protest was denied by CWPFL officials while agreeing to action a potential policy for the 2026 season.

Despite the disadvantage, the Bears battled hard – taking the game into overtime. Suffering the loss of starting QB Brock Orich (knee) and Linebacker Weston Patterson (ribs) due to injury didn’t make things easier but second year captain Luke Johnson put the team on his back with a pair of touchdowns and huge tackles on defence, almost allowing the Bears to pull it out. Orich did manage to return late in the game but was clearly nowhere close to 100%.

The loss pushes the Bears to the B-side final where they will take on the Drumheller Titans this Saturday at 1:00pm at HJ Cody field. Should they be successful they will advance to the B-side provincial final in Edmonton on November 8th.
