Amateur Football Across Alberta officially kicked off its 2025 Fall season this weekend with two of the four Sylvan Lake teams seeing action.
On Friday night the HJ Cody Lakers were in exhibition action against the Olds Spartans and came out on top 21-17
This was thanks to some thrilling late game defensive heroics, led by Jack Orich with a key goal line stop with under a minute left to seal the victory! It’s a new look for the Lakers who are looking to replace several key graduating players including QB Jace Martins and WR Jayden McLean, so to begin their campaign on a winning note should bode well for their 2025 season.
On Saturday, the U13 Peewee Bears began their league championship title defense with a strong performance on the road, defeating Strathmore 50-6.
It was also a different look for the Bears as they move forward without two-time team MVP Van Merkley. However the Bears defence, led by 2024 Defensive Player of the Year Luke Johnson, was dominant from the opening whistle – giving the offence time to find it’s footing. By the end of the first quarter, it was all systems go with no less than six different Bears finding the end zone including a pair from second year player Weston Patterson who chipped in with both an offensive and defensive touchdown. The real first test for the Bears will be after their bye week on September 13th here in Sylvan Lake when they take on the Lacombe Explosion who crushed Olds 54-0 in their season opener.

This upcoming weekend sees the Lakers with their regular season kickoff in Lacombe against the Rams, while the U16 Bantam Lions start their season in Red Deer where they will be taking on the Notre Dame Jr Bantam Cougars. The Atom Tigers will also be opening their season in Red Deer.
